Hyundai Class Action Lawsuit
A class action lawsuit was filed against Hyundai alleging that millions of its vehicles contain defective ZF-TRW airbag control units. The airbag control unit is the electrical component that commands a vehicle's airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy in a crash. According to the lawsuit, these units are vulnerable to a condition called electrical overstress, which can cause airbags and other safety systems to fail at the exact moment they are needed most.
Cases filed by vehicle owners across the country were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation, In re: ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units Products Liability Litigation, Case No. 2:19-ml-02905-JAK, before the Honorable John A. Kronstadt in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Twenty vehicle owners serve as settlement class representatives, with the law firms Baron & Budd, P.C. and Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP appointed as co-lead counsel for the class.
Hyundai denies the allegations and no court has found it liable. After roughly six years of litigation, the parties agreed to a settlement covering owners and lessees of affected Hyundai and Kia vehicles, and the court granted final approval on October 8, 2025.

Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Motor America, and parts affiliates Hyundai Mobis and Mobis Parts America agreed to a $62,100,100 class action settlement resolving claims that certain Hyundai vehicles contain defective ZF-TRW airbag control units. The court granted final approval of the settlement on October 8, 2025, and claims are now being accepted through April 6, 2027.
The settlement covers anyone who, on or before April 14, 2025, owned or leased a 2011-2019 Sonata, 2011-2019 Sonata Hybrid, 2018-2023 Kona, 2022-2023 Kona N, or 2019-2021 Veloster originally sold or leased in the United States. Both current and former owners and lessees are included.
Beyond cash payments, the settlement requires Hyundai to provide a ten-year warranty on parts installed through the airbag recalls, run a vehicle inspection program for crashes where an airbag failed to deploy, and fund an outreach program with a $3,500,000 budget to get more recalled vehicles repaired. Class counsel were awarded $20,493,033.30 in fees and costs, and each of the twenty class representatives received a $2,500 service award.

Hyundai Airbag Class Action Payout: Up to $350
Every eligible class member who files a claim can receive a residual distribution payment of up to $350 if their vehicle was recalled, or up to $150 if it was not. These payments are distributed per person from the settlement fund after expense reimbursements are paid, and no receipts or documentation are required.
Owners and lessees of recalled vehicles, certain 2011-2013 Sonata and 2011-2012 Sonata Hybrid models, can also be reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket costs they paid to complete the recall repair: rental car or transportation costs, towing charges, childcare, airbag control unit repair costs, and lost wages from time off work. These reimbursement claims should include supporting documents such as a receipt, invoice, or credit card statement.
Payments can be received by virtual debit card, PayPal, Venmo, or paper check. Paper checks expire 90 days after issuance, and virtual debit cards begin incurring inactivity fees after six months of non-use. Payments will be issued after the settlement's effective date; questions about a missing payment can be directed to the settlement administrator at 1-866-287-0740.
