Between April 2023 and September 18, 2024, cybercriminals exploited Lemonade's online insurance-quote platform and gained access to the personal information of people who used it — including sensitive data such as driver's license numbers. Lemonade began mailing notices to affected individuals in April 2025 and again in June 2025.
A class action lawsuit followed, alleging that Lemonade failed to adequately protect this personal information. The complaint brings claims for negligence, violation of the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act, and violation of New York General Business Law Section 349. Lemonade denies any wrongdoing and maintains that it did not violate any law.
Rather than continue litigating, the parties agreed to a settlement that provides cash payments and credit-protection benefits to affected individuals. The Court still has to grant the settlement final approval before any benefits are paid.
Lemonade agreed to establish a $10,500,000 settlement fund to resolve the claims. The fund pays for the benefits available to class members, the cost of credit-monitoring services, settlement-administration expenses, and any attorneys' fees and awards approved by the Court.
Every eligible class member can choose a cash payment, reimbursement for documented losses, or both — and separately receives three years of credit monitoring and identity-theft insurance at no cost. To receive a cash benefit, you must file a claim by September 6, 2026.
There are two cash benefits, and you can request either one or both. The Cash Payment is a pro rata (proportional) share of the settlement fund and requires no proof — the exact amount depends on how many people file valid claims. The Documented Loss Payment reimburses you for out-of-pocket losses that are more likely than not traceable to the data breach and that you paid on or after April 1, 2023, up to $10,000, and requires supporting documentation.
In addition to any cash benefit, every class member automatically receives three years of Credit Monitoring and Insurance Services — including three-bureau credit monitoring and up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance — at no cost and with no claim required. Cash benefits can be paid by mailed check or, if you file online, by Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, or ACH transfer.
You are generally included in this settlement if you are a living person residing in the United States and you were notified — in a notice mailed in April 2025 or June 2025 — that your personal information may have been compromised in the Lemonade data breach. The settlement class includes roughly 190,000 people.
Certain people are excluded, including Lemonade and its officers and directors, the judge assigned to the case and court staff, and anyone who formally opted out of the settlement. If you were notified of the breach and none of those exclusions apply to you, you are likely eligible to file a claim.
Between April 2023 and September 18, 2024, cybercriminals accessed personal information — including driver's license numbers — through Lemonade's online insurance-quote platform. A class action lawsuit alleged Lemonade failed to protect that information, and the company agreed to a $10,500,000 settlement to resolve the claims without admitting wrongdoing.
You are generally eligible if you are a U.S. resident and you received a notice — mailed in April 2025 or June 2025 — telling you that your personal information may have been compromised in the Lemonade data breach. Lemonade's officers and directors, the judge and court staff, and anyone who opted out are excluded.
Lemonade mailed notices to affected individuals in April 2025 and June 2025. If you received one of those notices, your personal information was identified as compromised. The notice also contains a Class Member ID, though you do not need it to file a claim.
You can request a pro rata Cash Payment, whose exact amount depends on how many valid claims are filed, and/or reimbursement of up to $10,000 for documented out-of-pocket losses traceable to the breach. Every class member also receives three years of credit monitoring and up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance at no cost.
No — you can request the Cash Payment without submitting any documentation. Proof is only required if you also want to be reimbursed for documented losses, in which case you must provide supporting records such as bank or credit-card statements, invoices, or receipts.
It reimburses you for out-of-pocket losses that are more likely than not traceable to the data breach and that you paid on or after April 1, 2023 — for example, unreimbursed fraud losses or fees you paid to protect yourself. Reimbursement is capped at $10,000 per person and requires supporting documentation.
The Cash Payment is a proportional (pro rata) share of the settlement fund that is split among everyone who files a valid claim electing it. It requires no proof of loss, so the exact per-person amount will not be known until the claims period closes and the number of valid claims is counted.
No. Three years of Credit Monitoring and Insurance Services — including three-bureau credit monitoring and up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance — is provided automatically to every class member through a unique code, whether or not you file a claim. You only need to file a claim to receive a cash benefit.
Claims must be submitted by September 6, 2026. Filing as early as possible is a good idea, especially if you are mailing your claim, so that it is received and processed in time.
If you do nothing, you will not receive any cash benefit and you will give up your right to sue Lemonade over the data breach. You will still be able to activate your automatic credit-monitoring benefit, but you will not share in the settlement fund.
